	This is the dog that all the merle pedigrees we have managed to acquire go back to. As you can see, the dog is buff and out of mainly buff and red breedings. Rusty Butch was bred to 2 different bitches, Penny Locks, a buff and Timberline's Betty, also a buff. Both of these breedings produced "BLUE ROANS" as listed with AKC Carrie's Muffin II and Rog's Snuffy Both of these "Blue Roans" are behind all the merles we have found. *Were they blue roan? Or were they merle?* Was Rusty Butch actually the sire? Or was it another dog? Or was the sire or dam or grandparent(s) to Rusty Butch a merle and therefore Rusty was too. Remember.. buff HIDES the merle gene.... Because this happened back in the early to mid 1980's, there is no way to do any DNA to check sires,or see the actual dog. Currently there is NO DNA tests to prove if any of these dogs were purebred or not. If Rusty Butch was the sire, then where did the merle come from? Merle is an incomplete dominant, which if bred to another dog, the dog will produce merle. Roan is also a dominate gene..one or both parents must be roan to produce roan. Merle and roan are not recessive. So, where are the merles or even the "roans" in this pedigree? If you check the other pedigrees on this site, you will see they all go back to this dog.
